500. The Young Family - Patricia Piccinini - 2002

The Young Family is the only contemporary art piece that I know of that has caught with such popularity it has become an Internet meme. That the general public would respond and reproduce the work so vehemently--albeit with many lies and hoax intents--demonstrates the work's resonance, success and importance. It captivates like a car wreck. Grotesque, ambitious and ambivalent about humans, our emotions and our place in the future, it is not unlike the works of Bosch or Dali. Its destiny remains to be determined. It may end up canonized, an icon of art that captured an Internet era; or it may be dismissed, forgotten. For now at least, it is a great work based on the contemporary shock and awe it inspires.
